Over the past year, retailers have been reporting a huge rise in shoplifting – offences have doubled at department store John Lewis with boss Dame Sharon White calling it an ‘epidemic’ – it’s important for commercial properties to take action to protect stock from being stolen and to protect staff from being assaulted.

Dame Sharon also claimed that some areas of retail have become “shells of their former selves” and that “havoc” has been called by violent attacks, often by repeat offenders.

A recent crime survey has suggested that 850 incidents of shoplifting, often featuring physical assault and threatening behaviour was happening on a daily basis. This is a 24% increase on figures from the previous year.

In response to these figures, the government has promised a “zero-tolerance approach to tackling shoplifting”, with specialist analysts and officers working on the problem. However, whilst this is expected to focus on the causes and criminal gangs operating throughout the country it is not expected that there will be measures to actually protect staff when incidents occur.

The number of Met police officers attending shoplifting reports has increased – but that is still only at 44% on the latest figures.
